I think there are two possible answers (at least). 1. if you live with a person and make assumptions about them. Never truely try to get to know them. This blind you so that even when they try to tell you who they are, you don't take it very seriously..its like a triviality compared to what you already (THINK) you 'know' about them. I think this happens to a degree with all relationship. But the larger degree that it happens the larger the shock when the assuming person learns that everything he/she assumed was dead wrong. 2. Some people are not really there. In other words they don't have a core self that their partner could ever really get to know. Everything they do and say is a lie both to themselves and others. Habitual liars almost always fit in this category. They are basiy unknowable, because their personalities are not real. As the saying goes, you are only as good as your word. A person without integrity of any kind, and such people exist, is a unknowable entity. Julianna
